You’ve probably heard it before: “Just keep trying for a year before you worry.”
It’s the advice many of us grew up with, but here’s the problem: it doesn’t reflect today’s reality. Our lives, our stress, our diets, and even the age most of us start trying for babies have all changed. And waiting 12 months before getting any answers? That can be more than just frustrating, it can actually cost you precious time.
A generation ago, women were having babies earlier, lifestyle conditions were less common, and the 12-month rule made a little more sense. But things look very different now.
Here’s something I wish more couples knew: egg and sperm health respond to nutrition and lifestyle changes over about 90–120 days. That means every month counts.
When well-meaning people tell you to “just wait it out,” what they’re really asking you to do is lose valuable months that could be spent building stronger foundations.
And here’s the thing – knowing what’s going on with your body isn’t just peace of mind. It’s power. It gives you the bigger picture, helps solve the puzzle in a timely way, and puts you back in control.
In this day and age, fertility care needs to be proactive, not reactive. A “wait and see” approach can be more than frustrating; it can be detrimental for couples who don’t have time to waste.
So often, couples come to me after years of trying. Sometimes it’s after multiple failed IVF cycles, when they are exhausted, heartbroken, and desperate for answers. Nutrition is usually treated as an afterthought – something they try when “nothing else has worked.”
But here’s the truth: nutrition isn’t something to tack on at the end. It’s the foundation. And the earlier we bring it to the forefront, the more time, money, and emotional energy we save.
Food and nutrients don’t guarantee pregnancy; nothing does. But they create the conditions that make pregnancy possible.
Balancing blood sugar, replenishing iron and vitamin D, supporting thyroid health, reducing inflammation – these are changes that can turn things around. Even something as simple as building a balanced fertility booster plate: more colour, more protein, more wholegrains, can shift the needle in the right direction.
The old “wait 12 months” advice belongs in the past. Every month matters, especially if you’re over 30. Being proactive with testing and nutrition isn’t about being anxious — it’s about being empowered.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with couples, it’s this: I want you to know you don’t have to wait years or go through repeated heartbreak before looking deeper. You deserve clarity sooner.
